Welcome to the Prosper Meniere Society

Named after Prosper Ménière (1799-1862), The Prosper Ménière Society (PMS) was founded in 1981 by the International Meniere’s Disease Research Institute (IMDRI) of the Colorado Otologic Research Center (CORC).
It was reorganized in 1990 and is set up as a separate not-for-profit corporation (501) (C) (3). The Society was reorganized in 1999 and moved to the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, where it is presently.
Its primary goal is to promote the academic dissemination and discussion of clinical research data on Ménière’s disease and all aspects of inner ear dysfunction, pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment.

15th International Symposium on Inner Ear Surgery and Medicine
The 15th International Symposium on Inner Ear Medicine and Surgery organized by the Prosper Meniere Society was held in Zell, Austria on March 10-17, 2012. This meeting included 24 hours of high-quality presentations covering a wide range of topics relevant to otolaryngology, as highlighted below. The sessions were well attended by the vast majority of participants.
Papers on topics related to Meniere’s disease (~25% of papers) focused on the latest issues of diagnosis and treatment as well as aspects of morphology and mechanisms. There was even a history prospective of inner ear science presented concerning the lives of Prosper Meniere and Julius Ewald.
Hot topics this year included 4 papers on video head impulse testing (vHIT), a technique which is revolutionizing diagnosis of the dizzy patient, 9 papers related to local drug delivery to the inner ear, and 6 papers on recent advances in cochlear implant technology. Other topics included superior canal dehiscence, tinnitus, noise, aging, middle ear implants, BPV, acute mastoiditis, and microtia.
As at past meetings of the society, the format encouraged detailed and frank discussion of all controversial areas, discussions that commonly continued over dinner in the elegant dining room at Hotel Theresa. This is not the starchy, polite discussion typical of the larger clinical and scientific meetings, but, rather, this was how science and medicine should be discussed—in detail and at length.
2012 Abstracts
The Gold Medal Award Recipient is awarded for furthering the goals of the Prosper Meniere Society through research excellence, scientific innovation, and far-reaching contributions to the investigation of inner ear disorders.
‘Let us give thanks to seeking spirits, to those with initiative, who raise questions of interest, stimulate active researches, provoke oppositions, because in a word, science gains and humanity applauds.” ~ Prosper Méniere, 1861
